　　一批彼此並不相識的年輕人——身心健康、情緒穩定的大學生，走進了“斯坦福監獄”。他們並沒有犯罪，只是受募到“監獄”——斯坦福大學的一個精心佈置的地下室，接受一項試驗。大學生們被隨機地分為“獄卒”和“犯人”，然後開始了為期兩周的試驗。然而，試驗僅僅進行了一周，原本單純的大學生，已變成了殘暴的獄卒和崩潰的犯人，試驗不得不終止了。受試者強烈感受到角色規範的影響，使作者得以深度剖析複雜的人性，透析“情境力量”對個人行為的影響，並分析造成監獄虐囚和種族屠殺的情境影響。日常生活中的種種社會角色劇本的規範與約束，會不會使我們像上帝最鍾愛的天使路西法那樣不知不覺中對他人做出難以置信的事，從而墮落成為魔鬼？我們如何抗拒情境影響力？作為心理學教授的作者也對此進行了研究，並做出了極有說服力的分析。
